Stopping Smoking

The fact that you are reading this shows that you are looking to free yourself from the unhealthy habit of smoking. You may well have tried and failed at other more mainstream methods. You may have tried willpower, gums and patches. You may have tried in the past to stop and suffered from irritability, mood swings, bad temper, cravings and possible weight gain.

How long will it take?

The hypnotherapy to stop smoking programme takes only one session of up to two hours. During this intensive session we will look at all of your triggers to smoke and find ways to help you to ignore, forget or respond differently to them.

How can hypnotherapy help

Using a combination of positive suggestion and visualisation I can make it easier for you to give up smoking. In fact you will be surprised to find that you feel confident and relaxed not only after the session, but continuing throughout the following weeks. You may worry about putting on weight or replacing one habit with another.  Any possible alternative habits are taken care of in the carefully worded session and you will find that you feel great, without resorting to other habits such as nail-biting or overeating.

The benefits

Some smokers, especially those who have smoked for years, believe that the damage to their health is irreversible. However you should be aware that it is never too late to stop smoking. In fact the benefits of quitting start immediately.  When you give up after just 8 hours blood oxygen levels return to normal. After 24 hours carbon monoxide is cleared from the body. After 48 hours your sense of taste and small begin to improve. After 72 hours breathing becomes easier and your energy levels increase.

Weight Control

Perhaps you’ve tried a number of diets which work for a while and then you gain all the weight you lost with a few extra pounds.  Dieting can so often feel like a constant battle; many find them impossible to keep to, constantly fighting their eating habits.  They can work in the short term but many people go back to eating normally and all the weight is put back on again, leading to feelings of failure and hopelessness.  Does this sound familiar?

Often what we eat and when we eat is a response to how we feel, who we are with and what time of day it is.  Sometimes we eat as a distraction to make us feel better but no amount of food is ever going to fill that emotional hole that gives the craving or hungry feeling.  In most cases food is not the issue – it’s the habits, the thoughts and it is used as a distracter.

How can hypnotherapy help

Behavioural change is paramount to making any weight loss route a success long term and I help you to change the way you feel about food, even the way you think about food. This stops the cravings and using food as an emotional crutch; it puts you back in control over what you choose to eat.  Hypnotherapy gets to the root cause of the comfort or emotional eating changing how you feel or react to things in your life by working on the emotions that are driving the behaviour.

Fears & Phobias

Do you have an intense fear of flying, driving, animals, reptiles, insects, needles or of being sick?  Would you rather climb ten flights of stairs rather than get into a lift?  If so you may be suffering from a phobia.

All people have fears or situations they would rather avoid.  It is part of everyday life and helps to keep us safe.  Some people are frightened by dentists, whilst others are worried about interviews.  Most people manage to control their fears and go about their normal day to day activities.

However, for some people the anxieties and fears are overwhelming and persistent.  The need to avoid the situation or object can be so intense that they drastically interfere with everyday life, even though they know the response is irrational.  The result of the phobia can lead to a sense of loss of control and can change the person’s view and perspective of life considerably even so much as to change their lifestyle completely.

How can hypnotherapy help

In hypnotherapy for phobias therapy, I find and release the emotions which originally caused or created the phobia.  You were not born with a phobia, it is something you have learned and it can be overcome.  One to two sessions will resolve most phobias for life.

I do not expose you to the object of your phobia.  That is always done by you when you feel ready to do so.  I understand that when you come to me for a phobia, you are still frightened of the particular thing.  I will not traumatise you in any way.

Anxiety, Stress & Panic Attacks

Do you often feel as though your stomach is churning, you’re short of breath or feeling dizzy and light-headed?  Sometimes you may hyperventilate, have a dry mouth, feel irritable or have a rapid heartbeat and palpitations.  If you suffer from panic attacks you may sometimes feel you are having a heart attack or dying. Whatever symptoms you experience, they can be frightening, overwhelming and debilitating.

Anxiety is an expression of fear due to a subconscious assessment of danger.  Whether this danger is real or imagined is unimportant because something in the environment triggers your anxious response and it feels real to you.

Anxiety usually appears during the teens or early adulthood and while the exact causes are unclear, there does seem to be a connection with life transitions that are potentially stressful: leaving school, having an intimidating or bullying boss, getting married, moving to a new house and so on.  Normally it starts with a particular event that scares the subconscious.  The subconscious has one task in life and that is to keep you safe.  If something should scare you (or even embarrass you deeply) the subconscious will seek to avoid the same type or similar situations.  There is also evidence for a genetic predisposition; if a family member has suffered from anxiety you have an increased risk, especially during a time in your life that is particularly stressful.

But these symptoms don’t have to be permanent.

How can hypnotherapy help

Hypnotherapy targets the processes we have learned.  As with all learning, it is impossible to unlearn.  For instance, how can you unlearn how to ride a bike? It is the same for anxiety and panic attacks. Once you have learned these processes it is difficult to unlearn them on your own. This is where hypnotherapy for anxiety and panic comes in.  It is able to access these subconscious processes, help you unlearn them and find a better way of handling situations in the future.

I work with you to remove the underlying anxiety and the beliefs surrounding it, providing you with a freedom you may not have experienced for years.

Do you struggle to get to sleep, worrying about the events of the day and what’s going to happen tomorrow?  Do you fall asleep exhausted but then wake up in the early hours and can’t get back to sleep?

Insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns are usually underpinned by anxiety. This anxiety is what people with insomnia tend to ruminate about whilst attempting to sleep.  Once this is removed, it is fairly straight forward to re-establish a natural pattern of sleep.

How can hypnotherapy help

I can help you return to a more normal pattern of sleep.  Together we will discover why you are not sleeping, I will use hypnotherapy to remove any underlying anxieties issues or disruptive thinking and help you establish a new sleeping pattern.  Teaching you how to relax before sleep is a significant part of the therapy.  Deep relaxation is a precursor to sleep and without it, sleep will elude you.

Often patterns of sleep disturbance become embedded in our subconscious minds after many months or years of unsatisfactory sleep.  By using hypnotherapy, you will experience fast and affective changes.

Addictions & Problem Behaviours

Do you struggle with compulsive gambling, problems with alcohol or drug misuse?  Sometimes compulsive shopping is an all-to-real problem causing financial problems as well as relationship issues. Others may struggle with sex addiction.  You may have tried many times to curb or control the behaviour but you are unable to maintain control.

The term ‘addiction’ is really only used to describe a physical or physiological dependency.  I prefer to use the term ‘problem behaviour’.  This is any behaviour that compromises, disrupts, or damages family, employment, personal or recreational pursuits.

How can hypnotherapy help

The initial consultation will focus on how the problem began and pattern of behaviour as it currently exists.  For example, someone with a drinking problem may just wish to stop drinking at home but still enjoy a glass or two whilst out.

I focus on the behavioural change that the client wants to achieve.  It is usually achieved relatively quickly and can normally lead to a permanent change.  The outcome is not influenced by the length of time the problem behaviour has existed.

Confidence & Self Esteem

We all have moments of self-doubt, low confidence or low self-esteem.  That’s quite normal.  However, sometimes things can get out of hand and lead to feelings of being unable to cope and feeling trapped or helpless.  Low confidence and self-esteem can be the result of a lifetime of events or a single incident.  Often it is a direct result of bullying, either in the family, at school or in the work place.  Even after it has stopped, the effects are still felt and affect our lives.

In many cases a lack of confidence and self-esteem isn’t the problem.  It’s a symptom of a problem and ultimately, it’s the belief surrounding it that drives the problem.  Beliefs can vary from person to person.  Not everyone lacks confidence in the same situation and everyone has confidence to some degree and has experienced confidence.  It may show itself when we are with friends or doing something we are particularly good or knowledgeable at.  I may be confident with close friends but if I believe that I lack confidence meeting new people, then I’m never going to go up to that person at a party and start a conversation or feel comfortable at events where I don’t know anyone etc.

How can hypnotherapy help

Hypnotherapy helps us find out where the belief that created the problem came from and cleanses the emotions and anxiety that drive that uncomfortable feeling.  It helps you reconnect with your confident self by helping you release and let go of emotions connected with past events and create new patterns of acting and being confident no matter who you are with, where you are and what you are doing.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Living with IBS is miserable – stomach pains, cramps, bloating, constipation or never wanting to be far from a loo.

The exact causes are unknown. IBS sufferers usually have no physical abnormalities in the bowel so it has been suggested that there is a strong link between stress, trauma and emotional upset.  What seems to happen is that the bowel becomes super sensitive and responds with violent contractions or spasms.  It is these symptoms that can be alleviated using hypnotherapy.

How can hypnotherapy help

Hypnotherapy could help in the following ways:

  • Helping you to relax, easing the symptoms if they are triggered by stress
  • Teaching you powerful visualisation techniques to imagine relief for your symptoms
  • Programming in a new positive reaction to stress triggers

Thanks to the research of Professor Peter Whorwell of Wythenshaw University Hospital Manchester, hypnotherapy is now acknowledged by the medical profession as an effective treatment for IBS. My hypnotherapy treatment is based on his work.

Do you feel embarrassed about your condition?  Does it make you feel ugly and disgusting?  Sometimes these feelings can be accompanied by feelings of worthlessness and helplessness and a belief that you will never get rid of it.  These feelings and beliefs hamper any recovery.  Removal of these beliefs is paramount to achieving a successful outcome.

Psoriasis is often triggered by a childhood trauma or period of high stress.  Things like bullying, bereavement, moving to a new house, changing schools, divorce, birth of a sibling can all create internal conflict, low self-esteem, anger, frustration and low self-confidence at a very young age.  This type of self-conditioning can be powerful and become deep rooted.

How can hypnotherapy help

I use hypnotherapy to create a change in the beliefs you hold about yourself at a subconscious level.  I also lessen the effects of any trauma or stressful events that have happened in the past, by allowing you to reassess the event with your adult mind. Hypnotherapy can also be used to help you become more relaxed about your skin which in turn helps with the itching and redness.  Your skin is the largest organ in your body and as an organ it is completely controlled by your subconscious mind.

Most of us go through moments or short periods in life when we feel down, dejected, frustrated or put upon.  This is quite normal and these feeling usually pass quite quickly. However, it’s when these negative feelings linger and overwhelm us that problems can start.

Sometimes depression just creeps up on you without any cause whilst at other times there are many factors at play, such as bereavement, redundancy, professional overload and burnout or after surgery.

Depression can affect anyone regardless of social background, creed or colour. It is is a disorder involving mood, thought and the body.  It tends to affect the way people think, what they think about themselves, how they eat, exercise and how they react to situations.  Often the sufferer feels hopeless, helpless and alone.

The following symptoms can be present:

  • Feelings of sadness which do not lift
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Marked weight loss or weight gain, and decreased or increased appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping or excessive sleeping
  • Difficulty concentrating and focusing on tasks
  • Chronic fatigue or lack of energy

It is important that you see your GP, so that you can be properly diagnosed and treated.

How can hypnotherapy help

Hypnotherapy for depression can help address the underlying cause as well as help you find much more effective coping behaviours. It can also help you achieve a happier mood and decrease or dispel the pessimistic and negative thoughts that generally accompany depression. We will replace old thinking patterns with more useful ones; enhancing your self-esteem and giving you back your confidence so that you can begin to move forward with your life.  By recognising past achievements and setting realistic goals for the future, it is possible to gain perspective once again and feel positive about the future.

Fibromyalgia, M.E. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Pain

People who have Fibromyalgia, M.E. or C.F.S. tend to share the same attributes.  You may have been told you are lazy or that it is all in your head.  In my experience nothing can be further from the truth. You probably regularly pushed yourself to your physical or mental capacity, or both, often more than your body could cope with and generally with a greater concern for looking after others than yourself.  Often the illness starts with an infection, virus, trauma or severe stress.  Several weeks later when you anticipate you should be feeling better, you now have the illness that gives you the fatigue and pain symptoms.

This continues for years whilst you become more and more frustrated by lack of diagnosis, answers or remedies.  You may even accumulate more illnesses as your immune system overloads.  Living with pain can be so debilitating leaving you feeling unhappy, disappointed, anxious, angry, trapped and helpless. At some point you may feel so low for so long that your internal voice may keep repeating a phrase that reflects the terrible thought that you may never recover. Sometimes. you start to feel a bit better but whilst you’re catching up with life, fatigue and pain catches up with you and the spiral continues.

The process

I am a registered practitioner in the OldPain2Go technique.  This technique is at the head of a revolution in how pain messages can be dramatically reduced or removed, rather than just managed.  The pain messages that you are currently receiving are the body’s way of shutting you down to conserve energy so you ‘get fixed’.  Because you are in a constant stressed state because you are in a situation you have no control over, the pain messages increase to try and slow you down even more.  The pain will only go when it feels safe that you will not keep pushing yourself to the limit.  With hypnotherapy we get in touch with that part of your mind and change that out of date program.

When seeing a therapist for chronic pain, it is advisable that the pain is checked out by a GP first for a formal diagnosis.

Pain Management

Living with current pain can be very debilitating.  It can affect all areas of your life, interfering with your ability to concentrate and you may feel as though you no longer get as much pleasure out of life because you are unable to do some of the things you used to do. Chronic pain is a source of stress and you may feel unhappy, disappointed, anxious, angry, trapped and helpless.

The way in which pain affects your emotions depends on the way you are thinking about it.  If you are thinking negatively about your pain yourself and your situation, then you are more likely to experience the emotions described.  Stress and anxiety can exacerbate pain and cause muscle tension.  If you are thinking more positively about your life, you will be more relaxed about life, you won’t feel as stressed and you will feel better about yourself.  Easier said than done though when the pain can be overwhelming

When seeing a therapist for chronic pain, it is advisable that the pain is checked out by a GP first for a formal diagnosis.
