Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is miserable.
Diarrhoea usually at the most inconvenient times
Stomach cramps and bloating
Constipation, pain and wind
A sense of urgency that when you need ‘to go’ you need ‘to go’ and ‘go right now’ and the panic that this causes
Never wanting to be far from a toilet because of IBS urgency, avoiding travel or situations in case your digestive system ‘plays up’.
Gut flare ups leaving you in pain and distress.
Afraid to leave the house or participate in events you previously enjoyed.
A restricted or limited diet
A loss of confidence and trust in your body and its reactions
The exact causes are unknown. IBS sufferers usually have no physical abnormalities in the bowel but that doesn’t mean to say that the symptoms aren’t real or painful. Anything but!
It has been suggested that there is a strong link between stress, trauma and emotional upset, either a distinct event or a build-up of events over a period of time. Certain medications and antibiotics can affect the lining of the gut, and it struggles to repair itself. The stress and anxiety can be compounded because you may then start worrying and feeling anxious about whether there something is dreadfully wrong, or you lose trust in yourself and your body to work ‘normally’. It’s a loop of worrying that continuously circles around.
The central nervous system gets stuck in fight/flight mode. Cortisol and adrenaline are constantly flooding your body and digestive system. The gut lining renews every five days, but it can’t do this or repair itself if your body is stuck in survival mode.
Motilin, a hormone responsible for easy movement of food through the gut, isn’t produced when the body and mind are stressed and anxious. The bowel becomes super sensitive and responds with violent contractions or spasms. It’s distressing and painful. It is these symptoms that can be alleviated using hypnotherapy.
Clinical Evidence for IBS Relief
Hypnotherapy for IBS relief has an extremely strong scientific evidence base. It is endorsed by the National Institute of Clinical Evidence (N.I.C.E). In clinical trials, 70 to 80% of people found their symptoms greatly reduced or even completely gone by using gut directed hypnotherapy. Thanks to the research of Professor Peter Whorwell of Wythenshaw University Hospital Manchester, hypnotherapy is now acknowledged by the medical profession as an effective treatment for IBS.
I offer a 5-session gut transformation programme for IBS relief
We start with the programme of 5 sessions. If that’s all we need, and it usually is, fantastic. If there’s value in more, of course that’s an option.
Reset your gut, reclaim your confidence, relieve your mind
What you will get:
Calming stress and anxiety which in turn calms the central nervous system
Restoring the connection between the brain and the gut which reduces the hypersensitivity
Tools and techniques to calm stress and anxiety which you can use and practise at home
Recordings where appropriate to reinforce work we have done in the session
Freedom from the dependence of IBS medication
Trust in your body
Most treatments only scratch the surface. Together, we address the root causes of and reestablish that mind-body connection. No more coping mechanisms – just a return to the real you.
